The Minka Preservation Societyは、略して「Minka」とも呼ばれ、日本の建造文化財の保護に尽力する地域社会に根ざした活発な組織です。 これには、日本の伝統的な農家の古民家や、日本の過去の建築と文化のエッセンスを体現する歴史的な家屋である町家が含まれます。近隣地域の 都市化、永年にわたる放置、核家族化などの理由により、その多くが危機に瀕しているこれらの象徴的な建造物の存続を確実にするために、Minkaはたゆまぬ努力を続けています。 建物自体の保存にとどまらず、その建築や維持に欠かせない伝統的な職人技や匠の技の維持にも深く関わっています。 これには、大工（伝統的建築家）、左官職人、屋根葺き職人の技能が含まれます。これらの職人の専門知識は、何世紀にもわたる創意工夫と自然との調和を反映したものです。 Minkaは、愛好家、支援者、職人たちを結びつける架け橋として、さまざまなイベントを企画しています。これらのイベントには、伝統的建築への理解を深め、同じ関心を持つ人々のコミュニティ意識を育むことを目的とした、体験型ワークショップ、ガイド付きツアー、文化的な祭事がたくさん含まれています。 また、この団体は、歴史的建造物の修復や維持に関心を持つ人々にツールや知識、サポートを提供する重要なリソースハブとしても機能しています。Minkaは、地方活性化を提唱することで、高齢化が進むコミュニティに新たな活力を与え、建築遺産の保存と、持続可能な成長と文化の継承の促進に貢献しています。 日本の建築遺産を擁護するMinka保存協会は、これらの貴重な建造物と、それらが伝える「ものがたり」が、将来の世代にとっても日本の文化の織りなす風景の一部であり続けることを願っています。

Lauren lives in a 1907 kominka north of Hakui on the Noto Peninsula with her Scottish husband, five adventurous rescue cats, and a quirky standard poodle. She and her husband entirely self-renovated, furnishing the place with an assortment of antiques, recycle shop treasures, hand-built items, and a few new pieces. She is also an aspiring organic gardener with the goal of being as self-sustainable as possible in a few years.

Initial interest in Japanese built heritage conservation was first sparked while working throughout the country as a trainer for hotels and tourism organizations. This would eventually lead to graduate studies at the Ironbridge International Institute for Cultural Heritage at the University of Birmingham and a PhD at Waseda University, with both degrees focused on adaptive reuse strategies for these unique structures.
He is currently a part-time lecturer at several universities in Tokyo, with the occasional foray as a tourism and hospitality consultant.

As the first foreign CEO (代表取締役) of a Japanese Sake Brewery in Japanese history, Marcus is focused on rebuilding Craft Businesses as well as championing the traditional ways of Japan.
Born in New York City to an Italian immigrant family in the FnB Industry, Marcus gave up restaurant management for a career on Wall Street working for companies such as Deloitte & Touche, American Express, and JPMorgan. His career quickly took him to Asia where he has lived across the region and specializing in Investment Banking and Strategic Consulting.
Marcus discovered Daimon Brewery in early 2017 and soon acquired it, turning it into one of the fastest growing Sake breweries in the Kansai region.
On the side he has acquired and renovated many traditional Minka and Machiya with his present project sitting in Northern Kyoto.

Alex Kerr: Minka Preservation Society Advisor
Long respected within the kominka community, Alex Kerr is a lifelong advocate of minka preservation and rural community revitalization. His own 300-year-old minka in the Iya Valley, Chiiori, is one of the best-known in all of Japan, and his revitalization efforts in Iya, rooted in sustainable tourism and living in harmony with nature serve as a model for other struggling rural villages.
After living in Japan during the mid-1960s, when his naval officer father was stationed in Yokohama, Kerr returned to Japan periodically, discovering the Iya Valley in 1971 and purchasing what would become Chiiori in 1973. He moved to Japan full-time in 1977.
Since Chiiori, Kerr has restored dozens of rural houses throughout Japan. His book Lost Japan (1993) was awarded the Shincho Gakugei Literature Prize for best non-fiction. His subsequent works include Dogs and Demons (2002) and Another Kyoto (with Kathy Arlyn Sokol, 2016).

Azby Brown: Minka Preservation Society Advisor
Azby Brown is a native of New Orleans, and has lived in Japan since 1985. A widely published author and authority on Japanese architecture, design, and environment, his groundbreaking writings on traditional Japanese carpentry, compact housing, and traditional sustainable practices of Japan are recognized as having brought these fields to the awareness of Western designers and the general public. His books include The Genius of Japanese Carpentry (1989/2014), Small Spaces (1993), The Japanese Dream House (2001), The Very Small Home (2005), and Just Enough: Lessons from Japan for sustainable living, architecture, and design (2010/2012/2022). In 2003 he founded the KIT Future Design Institute in Tokyo, which for 15 years focussed on cognitive and cultural issues surrounding the human hand and its use in the creative process, conducting collaborative research with neuroscientists and perceptual psychologists. His creative work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums internationally, and he is currently on the Architecture Faculty of Japan Women’s University. Since the start of Fukushima Nuclear Powerplant disaster in March 2011, Azby has been a core member of Safecast, a highly successful global volunteer-based citizen-science organization devoted to developing new technology platforms for crowdsourced environmental monitoring which promote open-source and open data principles. He is Safecast’s lead researcher, closely involved with assisting affected communities and analyzing and reporting the issues they face.

Yoshihiro Takishita: Minka Preservation Society Advisor
Yoshihiro Takishita is a distinguished Japanese architect, author, and cultural preservationist renowned for his life’s work in rescuing and restoring traditional Japanese farmhouses, known as kominka. His visionary efforts have played a vital role in preserving Japan’s rural architectural heritage and revitalizing regional communities.
Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1945, Takishita originally trained in law at Waseda University. However, his path changed dramatically in the mid-1960s when he discovered that a 250-year-old thatched farmhouse in his hometown was about to be submerged due to a dam construction project. Moved by the urgency to save this piece of history, he undertook the ambitious task of dismantling the house and relocating it to a hilltop site in Kamakura. There, he rebuilt it as a home for his adoptive father, the celebrated American journalist John Roderick. This experience marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to kominka preservation.
Since that formative project, Takishita has restored over 35 historic homes across Japan, combining architectural integrity with deep cultural sensitivity. He founded the Japan Minka Reuse and Recycle Association and has become a leading voice in raising awareness about the value of traditional architecture in a modernizing society.

滝下義弘氏は、日本の伝統的な古民家（こみんか）の保存・再生に生涯を捧げてこられた建築家であり、著述家、そして文化継承の担い手として広く知られております。その情熱と洞察により、多くの歴史的建築物が破壊から救われ、日本の地方に新たな命が吹き込まれています。
1945年、岐阜県にお生まれになり、早稲田大学にて法学を修められました。しかし、1960年代半ば、故郷にあった築250年の茅葺き民家がダム建設により水没の危機に瀕していることを知り、大きな決断をされます。その家を解体し、鎌倉の丘に移築・再建。アメリカ人記者であり、後に養父となるジョン・ロデリック氏の住まいとして蘇らせました。これが氏の古民家再生の原点となりました。

Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1945, Takishita originally trained in law at Waseda University. However, his path changed dramatically in the mid-1960s when he discovered that a 250-year-old thatched farmhouse in his hometown was about to be submerged due to a dam construction project. Moved by the urgency to save this piece of history, he undertook the ambitious task of dismantling the house and relocating it to a hilltop site in Kamakura. There, he rebuilt it as a home for his adoptive father, the celebrated American journalist John Roderick. This experience marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to kominka preservation.
Since that formative project, Takishita has restored over 35 historic homes across Japan, combining architectural integrity with deep cultural sensitivity. He founded the Japan Minka Reuse and Recycle Association and has become a leading voice in raising awareness about the value of traditional architecture in a modernizing society.

1945年、岐阜県にお生まれになり、早稲田大学にて法学を修められました。しかし、1960年代半ば、故郷にあった築250年の茅葺き民家がダム建設により水没の危機に瀕していることを知り、大きな決断をされます。その家を解体し、鎌倉の丘に移築・再建。アメリカ人記者であり、後に養父となるジョン・ロデリック氏の住まいとして蘇らせました。これが氏の古民家再生の原点となりました。

Haruo Nishio: Minka Preservation Society Advisor
Haruo Nishio is a Japanese craftsman who has devoted his career to reviving the art of traditional thatched roofing. After completing his university studies in Kyoto in the mid-1990s, he relocated to Miyama, a rural village known for its historical thatched houses. At the time, only a couple of thatchers remained in the area, both aging and without apprentices. Nishio saw this as a chance to learn and preserve a disappearing skill.
Despite doubts from those around him—many of whom considered thatching an outdated profession—he committed himself to the craft. Over time, he built a reputation for his expertise and deep respect for the tradition. To support both the trade and cultural appreciation for rural architecture, Nishio launched Miyama Futon & Breakfast, a hospitality venture that offers guests a chance to stay in restored thatched homes. The initiative connects modern visitors with Japan’s rural heritage in a hands-on way.
He also wrote a book titled Why I Became a Thatcher, where he reflects on the meaning behind his work. For Nishio, thatched roofs aren’t just beautiful or nostalgic—they represent a living connection to the land and a sustainable form of building that, with care, can last for generations.
Through his efforts, he has helped breathe new life into an ancient tradition while encouraging others to see its value in the present day.
